Our Green Policy
Green is the colour of most vegetables, grass, traffic light 'Go' lights and trees. Everything green is nice (except sprouts). Apart from being a nice colour, it is also a good thing to be. The population is getting bigger, we're running out of fossil fuels, our landfill sites will be full in around 7 years, so it's not too great out there.
One reason HomeCook started was that we thought that was silly that if you wanted good quality frozen food it had to be driven all the way up from the depths of England. In some cases it was made in a massive kitchen, using products from all over the place, with a healthy dose of goodness knows what pumped into each dish. We try and use local ingredients whenever we can. One of our regular suppliers is Bankhead Farm. they grow a lot and we buy a lot. They're under 3 miles away. That's close!
Some packaging is not too unlike a pass the parcel game, with lashings of cardboard, and a nasty plastic tray. Too much isn't good, so we have tried to address that too. We do use polystyrene packing cases for big deliveries, but so far we have recycled them every time, and so far we've only ever bought two from new! As they're second hand, and we reuse them, the guilt is washed away! Our packaging is minimal - although we will have to go for a 1/2 size cardboard sleeve, and our tray is paper, not plastic.
We recycle as much paper as possible and we try and keep the office heating to a minimum, as it makes Kathy work faster (to keep warm!)
